Dark Diva Workshop and Performance Series
In March 2009 we launched our first Dark Diva Workshop and Performance Series.
We hosted an evening of dance from some of the most talented and dedicated teachers in the Washington D.C. metro area. The audience was filled with our students, family and friends. The air was one of total excitement as each Dark Diva offered her special presentation. We were also delighted with a "male" dancer who 'wowed"
The following weekend, Khadijah the Beautiful traveled here from Colorado taught classes on the Saudian Ararabian dance call the Khaleegi.
We are preparing for our 2010 series.
We'll be bring talented women of North African dance to the area to teach and perform. We'll kick off our first workshop with the Diva from St.Louis MO Somra El Nubia. She is not a stranger to this area. She taught at the first and second BOCA conference in Washington D.C. as well as all over the United States. She is a much sought after teacher/performer because of her passion for the dance and her ability to impart the history and love of this dance in a non-threatening and simple way. We welcome her in March 2010
Somra El Nubia
Our beloved Somra hails from St.Louis
Mo. She too posesses the daring spirit of the pioneer.
Dancing and performing since the 70's Somra has withstood the ridicule of many who thought that it was absurd for an African american woman to dance Bellydance. However, she has persevered and consequently exposed hundreds of women of African ancestry to this art form and thus renewing their confidence in their abilities and beauty. Somra is a gifted choreographer , teacher and costume designer, We are honored to have her come back to the east coast.
2010 Dark Diva
Teacher:
Nakish
(The Lady with the Eyes)
Truly a pioneer in the Bellydance world. She is one of our national treasures. She is best known for being one of the first Black Bellydancer in the US to dance abroad!
Before coming to bellydance Nakish was already an accomplished dancer. Her talent was quickly recognized by Jamila Salimpour founder of Bal Anat, the west coast company that started the Tribal dance movement in the US.
Nakish rose to become a soloist and later a teacher in the company.
It is truly an honor to have someone of her caliber and stature with the Dark Diva Series. Her workshop is only for the serious dancer indeed.
Arianna Halima El Tiye
Arianna currently hails from New York City. She is an accomplised, performer, teacher, researcher, writer and producer. Her roots are in Nubia, East Africa and the richness of this region of Africa comes forth in her teaching, life philosopy and performance. She is founder and choreographer of Nubian Moon Daughters who have performed all over the world. She too is much in demand for her instruction and rich cultural insight and knowledge. We are honored to have here in 2010!.
Annitra Raven Moon
The "Power Goddess" will honor us with her exuberant instruction and personality. A well known teacher, performer and entreprenuer on the west coast,, Raven Moon will share her wonderful skills with us.
She proves that the full-figured women has much to offer to the beauty and mastery of this dance.
We are proud to have her apart of Dark Divas
There are many more great Divas Dancers on board to bless us with their gifts. Visit the website often for updates on the events.
